About Us

In 1957, a group of forward-thinking Texas Panhandle community members came together to address the area’s healthcare needs. Their vision created a legacy that grew into the Amarillo Area Foundation. The Foundation works with individuals, families, businesses and organizations to create charitable funds to support the community causes they care about. 

We are dedicated to supporting the people and programs that enrich the lives of everyone in the Texas Panhandle. We look for opportunities to foster healthy communities.

Leadership goes beyond managing people. It comes in many shapes and sizes, but it always involves being other-centered. It’s about providing a vision, influencing and serving others, and being bold enough to realize that reaching your goal will take the efforts of many people. To maximize our positive impact on the region, the Amarillo Area Foundation develops and implements initiatives and programs to address individual and community needs. Working with donors, nonprofit organizations, civic leaders, local and national experts, we collaborate with Texas Panhandle communities to help all residents achieve their highest potential.

The Amarillo Area Foundation allows donors to achieve their charitable goals simply and powerfully by offering a variety of fund options to meet donors’ needs. These Funds maximize the impact of donors’ charitable dollars by pooling them into a single endowment that grows in perpetuity and makes timely grants to the most needed areas of our community. Donor advised funds allow donors to share in the selection of the charitable organization or specific area of interest.

Amarillo Area Foundation LEGACY FUND FOUNDERS, all donors with cumulative contributions of $10,000 or more are recognized as "Legacy Founders." Current, past and planned gift are counted toward Legacy Fund recognition.

During 2014, our generous donors made possible numerous grants totaling nearly $8.5 million from corporate, designated, donor-advised, endowment and scholarship funds. We thank all of our donors for their generous and thoughtful contributions.

The Foundation has been a membership organization since 1979. We offer our members opportunities to help the people of the Panhandle by supporting numerous nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving education, arts and cultural activities, the environment, and health and human services. The diverse nature of the Foundation services allows members to contribute to a variety of efforts that improve our quality of life.

By adhering to investment policies and practices designed to produce consistent growth, coupled with prudent spending, the Foundation Board of Directors and Investment Committee seek to create and maintain a robust portfolio to support a perpetual flow of philanthropic resources to enhance the quality of life in the Texas Panhandle.

The Amarillo Area Foundation strengthens our community in many ways.
