AAF DEVELOPS AND IMPLEMENTS INITIATIVES AND PROGRAMS TO ADDRESS INDIVIDUAL AND COMMUNITY NEEDS

Amarillo Area Foundations GRANTMAKING FUND DISTRIBUTIONS

Unrestricted funds are discretionary funds established by individual donors through contributions or bequests. The Foundation’s Board of Directors has discretion to use these gifts as they deem appropriate, often for competitive discretionary grantmaking. During 2016, the Foundation managed 22 Unrestricted Funds.

$1,595,878 in distributions in 2016

ACE FUND DISTRIBUTIONS

The ACE (Achievement through Commitment to Education) Scholarship Program was established in 1994 to improve graduation rates and academic performance at Palo Duro High School and has expanded to include Caprock High School and select students from Tascosa High School.

$897,800 in distributions in 2016

AGENCY FUND DISTRIBUTIONS

Agency funds are those held for a specific nonprofit organization. When established as “endowed” funds, as is typically the case, the corpus is preserved by reinvesting quarterly earnings, or the agency may use the earnings based on the Foundation spending policy by taking quarterly or annual distributions. Agency funds that are not endowed allow use of fund principal in addition to income. The decision to reinvest or use quarterly earnings is established by the agency when the fund is created. During 2016, the Foundation managed 50 Agency Funds.

$541,155 in distributions in 2016

COMMUNITY DESIGNATED FUND DISTRIBUTIONS

To celebrate the Amarillo Area Foundation’s 50 years of service in 2007, area communities were invited to establish funds at the Foundation. The Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation offered matching funds up to $50,000 in 2007 and again in 2008. By establishing these funds at the Foundation and taking advantage of the generous match, communities were able to begin building a legacy for their citizens through grantmaking and long-term growth.

Thirty-seven Panhandle communities originally established funds to plan for the future and address the current needs of their residents. During 2016, the Foundation managed 32 Community Designated Funds.

$260,818 in distributions in 2016

DONOR ADVISED FUND DISTRIBUTIONS

Donor advised funds are established to enable charitable giving. Donors often treat these funds as designated charitable savings accounts. During 2016, the Foundation managed 74 Donor Advised Funds.

$1,673,817 in distributions in 2016

DONOR DESIGNATED FUND DISTRIBUTIONS

Designated funds (a.k.a. Donor Designated funds) are typically established by one or more donors and require that the Foundation distribute income from the funds to a particular charity or for a particular field of interest. Thus, a designated fund may be designed to underwrite a particular charitable venture or purpose. During 2016, the Foundation managed 74 Donor Designated Funds.

$3,549,049 in distributions in 2016

FIELD OF INTEREST FUND DISTRIBUTIONS

Field of Interest funds allow the donor or donors to instruct the community foundation to use available grant dollars in a certain program area such as education, health, youth, the environment, etc., with the Foundation or an advisory committee determining the specific recipient. During 2016, the Foundation managed 46 Field of Interest Funds.

$348,551 in distributions in 2016

SCHOLARSHIP FUND DISTRIBUTIONS

Scholarship funds are typically endowed funds wherein investment income is used to fund scholarship awards. The application, selection, and award process is managed by the Foundation’s staff and a volunteer Scholarship Selection Committee; a small number of scholarship awards are selected by outside review committees. During 2016, the Foundation managed 83 Scholarship Funds.
